Wire Rope Gauge

Wire rope at manufacturer tollerance and above actual reduced size will not slide into the groove machined into the rope gauge.  Find the rope size on the gauge and slide onto the rope.  The side walls of the gauge should rest on the raised portion of two strands.  For those not familiar with wire rope, the raised portion of the rope strand being the crown.  Top center of two opposite rope strands.  As the rope diameter reduces to the actual reduced size and lower it slides down the length of the slot for that particular rope size.

The wire rope gauge slots are machined to the actural reduced size stamped of the reverse of the tool.  Actual reduced size is the standard used by buildings departments to issue a code violation and require rope replacement.

CRUNCH THE NUMBERS ON SOME COMMON SIZE ROPES

1/2" rope measures (.5000) +/- manufacturers tollerance -- actual reduced size (.4688) or 15/32".  Actual reduced size means undersizing ropes.  The reduced size is .0312 or 1/32" of wear on the diameter of the rope.
5/8" rope measures (.6250) +/- manufacturers tollerance -- actual reduced size (.5781) or 37/64".  Actual reduced size means undersizing ropes.  The reduced size is (.0469) or 3/64" of wear on the diameter of the rope.
11/16" rope measures (.6875) +/- manufacturers tollerance -- actual reduced size (.6406) or 41/64".  Actual reduced size means undersizing ropes.  The reduced size is (.0469) or 3/64" of wear on the diameter of the rope.

ROPES WITH REDUCED SIZE WILL REQUIRE ADDITIONAL INSPECTIONS UNTIL REPLACEMENT
